  Then, she looks up at me, and I smirk back at her—confirming that it’s true…that I just had her husband, her supposed savior, between my delicate, little legs.

  “You see, I took the woman who was supposed to become your new Queen…” Chuck continues, gesturing to Madeline. “And, I thought she’d be enough to make me feel like I’d eviscerated your masculinity. But, I guess Queens are a little like potato chips. You can never have just one!”

  Without a word, daddy flies towards Chuck, so fast that even I can’t see it happen.

  While daddy’s monstrously big hands choke the life out of Chuck, Chuck slams his own hands against daddy’s body. Blue light pulses out of them and electrifies daddy. Daddy struggles to hold onto Chuck’s neck, squeezing harder even as his body gets filled with the raw, blue energy.

  Then, Chuck lets go of daddy, but then balls his fist up and hits daddy squarely in the center of daddy’s abdomen—sending his terrifying large body fast towards me.

  JOHN II

  “Holy shit…they are killing each other,” I tell Julian as he finishes making the fire.

  I look over at his work and am left speechless by the beauty of it, a masterpiece of silver flames dancing on top of each other. It’s incredibly bright, like a million shining diamonds, and it’s so awe-inspiring to behold that I completely forget that there’s a fucking vampire civil war happening below us.

  “Maybe, we don’t even need the fire,” Julien laughs, amused. “But, let’s drop it down on them just in case!”

  “So, this will…”

  “Kill them all in the most brutal fashion possible? Yes, I believe it will. The witch who gave you this recipe is quite brilliant. You’ll have to introduce me to her, darling, after all this nasty business is over with!” Julien smiles.

  “Funny, I was sure you’d want to kill me as soon as you got the recipe,” I tell him.

  “Of course you did because that’s exactly what I should do if I had any sense. But sense left me after my greatest soldier…my, my best friend, in fact, murdered me…for a human whore…” Julien says, grinding his fangs.

  His eyes grow dark, then a cloudy grey, then a shiny black. I know he’s losing control now, but I also know that I need him to stay focus until this is seen through to the end—however, wrong what we’re doing might be.

  “Julien, stay with me, Julien!” I plead.

  “He’s here. I’ve been so distracted with this damned fire that I didn’t notice his scent, but now that I smell it, it’s as clear as day to me. The ungrateful bastard is here! I’ll kill him for what he did!” Julien screams.

  “No!” I scream.

  But, in an instant, Julien disappears. Off to god knows where. And, as I look down through a window in the roof at the carnage happening below, I’m almost entirely sure he will never be back.

  “No, no, no! I need you! I can’t do this without you! Where the fuck are you!?” I scream to no one.

  But, then, another vampire appears out of a black wisp in the air. And, he holds me up in the sky by my neck.

  I’m blacking out now, making peace with my brief, misguided life, and preparing for the end.

  “Oh, was I not the vampire you were looking for, human?” He asks his face filled with such cruel racism for my kind that it almost horrifies me to death. “What are you doing up here, human?! You must be working for him… Tell me the extent of his plan!”

  Then, Julien appears behind this new vampire and yanks him by his hair—causing his neck to jerk back and making him lose his grip on me.

  I fall onto the roof, breathing hard and weeping because I did not expect to still be alive right now.

  “Apparently, your daddy still has not taught you how to use words instead of your fists, little boy!” Julien cackles.

  “Julien? I thought you were dead!” The other vampire says.

  “That’s the thing about us old-timers. We might lack your tenacity, but we’re quite resourceful!” Julien whispers in his ear, his tongue slithering the other vampire’s ear.

  “As your Prince, I order you to release me at once, you fucking common trash!” The other vampire spits venomously.

  “” But, of course, my liege!” Julien shrieks wildly.

  Then, he pushes the other vampire forward, and the other vampire goes flying into the vast, silver fire. His body immediately catches fire and begins to sparkle brightly as the vampire screams in terrifying agony.

  A woman appears next to Julien and me. Her skin is pale, and her eyes are a deep ruby, but she doesn’t quite as frightening as every other vampire I’ve had the unfortunate experience of meeting.

  “Shane? My love? My love, where are you?” She calls out.

  “And, who are you supposed to be?” Julien asks, yawning.

  “I’m his fiancé and your future Princess!” She seethes.

  “Oh, well, then, I’d probably do something about that…” Julien says, pointing to the vampire who’s been shrieking as his body decomposes in the bright, violent silver light.

  “No…NOOO!!!!!!!!” She screams.

  She starts crying so violently that it even makes me sad, my empathy taking over. This vampire clearly meant everything to her and the energy overtaking her as she is forced to accept what is happening…what has happened so tragic that it makes me regret everything I’ve done to reach this point.

  Then, her eyes turn a shiny black, and her skin turns a sick, monstrous shade of white, and her body becomes filled with black veins all, which push out through all directions in her skin. She grows larger and larger, and, soon, she’s towering over Julien and me.

  I look over at Julien, who stares at her, clearly afraid out of his mind. And, I can tell that he did not expect this to happen at all—that what’s happening is something incredibly rare even to them.

  Then, Julien looks at me and whispers a single word:

  “Run.”
